Massage is one of the oldest healing arts: Chinese records dating back 3,000 years document its use; the ancient Hindus, Persians and Egyptians applied forms of massage for many ailments; and Hippocrates wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems. Today, the benefits of massage are varied and far-reaching. As an accepted part of many physical rehabilitation programs, massage therapy has also proven beneficial for many chronic conditions, including low back pain, arthritis, bursitis, fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes, immunity suppression, infertility, smoking cessation, depression, and more. And, as many millions will attest, massage also helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday living that can lead to disease and illness.
Massage, bodywork and somatic therapies are defined as the application of various techniques to the muscular structure and soft tissues of the human body. Specifically:
The application of soft-tissue manipulation techniques to the body, generally intended to reduce stress and fatigue while improving circulation. The many variations of massage account for several different techniques.
Various forms of touch therapies that may use manipulation, movement, and/or repatterning to affect structural changes to the body.
Meaning “of the body.” Many times this term is used to denote a body/mind or whole-body approach as distinguished from a physiology-only or environmental perspective.
The services of a bodywork professional may be covered by health insurance when prescribed by a chiropractor or osteopath. Therapies provided as part of a prescribed treatment by a physician or registered physical therapist are often covered.
The average full-body massage or bodywork session lasts approximately one hour. A half-hour appointment only allows time for a partial massage session, such as neck and shoulders, back or legs and feet. Many people prefer a 60- to 90-minute session for optimal relaxation. Always allow relaxation time prior to and after the session. Hot tubs, steam baths and saunas can assist in the relaxation process.
What exactly are the benefits of receiving massage or bodywork treatments? Useful for all of the conditions listed below and more, massage can:
- Alleviate low-back pain and improve range of motion.
- Assist with shorter, easier labor for expectant mothers and shorten maternity hospital stays.
- Ease medication dependence.
- Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow—the body’s natural defense system.
- Exercise and stretch weak, tight, or atrophied muscles.
- Help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts.
- Improve the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin.
- Increase joint flexibility.
- Lessen depression and anxiety.
- Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks.
- Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation.
- Reduce postsurgery adhesions and swelling.
- Reduce spasms and cramping.
- Relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles.
- Release endorphins—amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkiller.
- Relieve migraine pain.
Massage and bodywork can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage and bodywork is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well-being.
Yes. That’s why it’s imperative that, before you begin your session, the practitioner asks general health questions. It is very important that you inform the practitioner of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor’s care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage or bodywork prior to any session. Your practitioner may require a recommendation or approval from your doctor.
You and the practitioner will discuss the desired outcome of your session. This will determine which parts of your body require massage. A typical full body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. You will not be touched on or near your genitals (male or female) or breasts (female).
You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.
What Our Clients Are Saying
Where do I start… I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!
Anna is very nice, friendly, experienced and professional. Office is very clean and very beautiful. My skin looks so much better and younger now that I see Anna regularly. She never sold me service or product I didn’t need - I see huge difference in appearance of my wrinkles. I couldn’t get these results by buying the most expensive products on the market.
I was so happy with my results that I sent my daughter in. And what do you know - after the very first visit my daughter’s skin improved more than after years of going to dermatologist. This is what right procedure and right product does!
I am so happy I started going here - thank you Anna!!!
Went to DWC for the first time today, and I had a nice experience. Alex was very helpful via email with checking my insurance and getting me scheduled. Tatyana did a 1 hr massage and chiropractic adjustment on me. I thought she did a great job and I felt like she knew what she was doing. She used a lot of pressure, which is exactly what I asked for and needed. My muscles feel loose and I am expecting some soreness. I felt like the office was clean and comfortable. My appointment was at 11:00 and I got brought back around 11:10…which is no big deal to me. Sometimes for good care you must wait a few minutes. Overall, I thought it was pleasant…and I’m hoping we can eventually relieve some of my back pain.
This place is top notch! I have seen both Ana for a facial and Tatiana for ultrasound therapy after a work out injury and they truly treat you like family. They were both extremely knowledgeable and provided excellent service. I was seen immediately after arriving and they always offer something to drink upon arrival. Their spa is modern, clean, and inviting. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a relaxing spa experience.
Love the massage! I didn’t realize the tension was built up on my right shoulder from daily activities, after the massage, I felt tons of weight lift of my shoulder. The massage therapist is also a licensed chiropractor; she is friendly, attentive, and made me feel very comfortable.
I have been going to Dr. Tatyana for over a year now after finding this place on Yelp. She is both, a chiropractor and a licensed massage therapist. She has been wonderful and has helped ease my aches and pains.
When my brand new hubby and I got back from our honeymoon, my back began to really complain. Perhaps it was the 10+ hour flights, or perhaps it was just the stress of the wedding leaving my body, but my upper back began to hurt in a way that it had never hurt before… the pain was bright, and it actually hurt for me to swallow food, in addition to the typical aches and pains. I’m an opera singer, and having your neck and upper back hurting is VERY disconcerting… I was worried.
So, I went on Yelp to look for a place nearby that could help straighten me out. No joke… I am so, so happy I found this place. First of all, there was a discount running, so I got $30 off of my services. The reviews are fantastic… you can see for yourself. They ended up being able to fit me in that day, and I went to see Tatyana. She did a very intense deep tissue massage on me, did a bit of chiropractic stuff on me (which I’d never had done, but it was nothing jarring at all), and taught me some stretches to do at home by myself. She’s VERY knowledgeable, and very nice… I actually had a lovely conversation through this! I was definitely sore from the massage for the next few days, but the back pain went away. Obviously, there was just a really unhappy muscle and she managed to work it out.
I will definitely be returning to this place should I find myself in need of repair again. Not bad prices at all, and very effective. I cannot recommend it enough!
My office is in the area and I needed some neck and back work. I saw the positive reviews on Yelp and decided to take the $30 for $60 coupon. And I’m glad I did. The location is easy to find. It’s in a nice office complex. They are very punctual. Tatyana is actually a chiro but also does massage. She was attentive and the massage was good. I’m going to try Massage Envy on Mt. Vernon next b/c of price. Tatyana is$80 for a 1 hour massage. Would also like to try skin care person next time. But bottom line is I like this place and would return.
I have loved my experience with Tatayana. The chiropractic care is a mix of body (massage) and bone work and she has helped me tremendously. I recommended her to both my husband and mother and would recommend her to anyone else. I am 4 months pregnant and she has been great.
Wonderful place with excellent staff. Had a great deep tissue massage and would be a regular if I stayed in the area
I travel to Atlanta often and found Dunwoody Wellness Center on Yelp and decided to give a try for a massage. I didn’t realize just how much I needed it until after it was over. My shoulders, neck and lower back felt lighter, less tense and allowed me to function like a normal person. I highly recommend the massage services and will likely be back again for routine chiropractic care and maybe even a facial….Great atmosphere and personable staff - a gem of a place.
Dunwoody Wellness is truly a wonderful place. You are treated very well there- and actually cared for- in a really rare way. Tatiyana is amazing- I feel so fortunate to have been connected with such a talented specialist. Totally in tune with whatever vibe you are putting out when you are there- if you feel chatty, you can chat- of you want to relax and enjoy, you can of course do that too. Appointment reminders via text are so helpful. It really a fantastic place, I am very happy to be a patient there.
i never write reviews, but this time i felt that i absolutely must share my excitement with the world!!!! The new magical treatment offered by DWC is this RADIO FREQUENCY machine that erased at least 10 years off of my face!!!!!!! IT IS TO DIE FOR!!!! I’m a proud 44 years old mother of two :~) who is still trying to look decent :~) and, at times, some help is truly required :~) i’ve tried bottox in the past, and decided to give this new technology a shot… oh how so i’m glad i did!!! after my bottox i’d hear from people, "you look different"…. after first few sessions of this treatment i kept hearing "you look amazing"! That is exactly why i feel that i must scream to the whole world, this is your BEST solution if your goal is NOT to look different, but to simply look AMAZING!!!!!!! The wrinkles are GONE, my face looks refreshed, toned and alive, and, the best thing I DON’T HAVE TO WEAR MUCH OF A MAKE UP ANYMORE!!!!!!! It feels GREAT!!!! I totally recomment this magic to all!!!! My girlfriend has already scheduled her first five sessions with Anna, who’s hands are magical even without this machine; but with this tool, trust me, you are in GOOD HANDS!!
